Description
Simple catgut is rapidly absorbed. Furthermore, tensile strength is maintained for only 7 to 10 days after implantation. Additionally, absorption is complete within 70 days.
The surgeon can choose to use simple catgut in tissues that heal quickly and require minimal support, for example, to ligate superficial blood vessels and suture subcutaneous fatty tissue. Moreover, simple surgical gut can also be specially treated with heat to expedite the loss and absorption of tensile strength. This fast-absorbing surgical gut is primarily used for epidermal sutures where sutures are required for only five to seven days. However, these sutures have less tensile strength than similar U.S.P. Size simple surgical gut. Finally, fast-absorbing simple catgut should not be used internally.
