Polydioxanone

Description

The compound of the polyester monofilament, poly (p-dioxanone), represents a significant advancement in suture options. It combines the characteristics of a soft, flexible, monofilament construction with the capacity for absorption, providing extended wound support for up to six weeks. Additionally, it provokes only mild tissue reaction, making it highly suitable for various types of soft tissue approximations, including pediatric, cardiovascular, orthopedic, gynecological, ophthalmic, plastic, digestive, and colonic surgeries.

Like other synthetic absorbable sutures, polydioxanone sutures are absorbed through hydrolysis. Approximately 90% of tensile strength remains after two weeks post-implantation, 90% at four weeks, and 62% after six weeks. Absorption is minimal until around postoperative day 90 and is essentially completed within six months. However, the safety and effectiveness of polydioxanone sutures in microsurgery, neural tissue, and adult cardiovascular tissue have not been established. Polydioxanone sutures are available in violet and purple strands for enhanced visibility.
